China slammed for breaking promise to WHO as 'secretive' nation hid coronavirus outbreak

In the BBC's 'China's coronavirus coverup' documentary, Lord Chris Patten said he was surprised at the extent of secrecy the Chinese Communist Party had displayed regarding the initial COVID-19 outbreak. Following the SARS coronavirus crisis the World Health Organisation strengthened early warning rules so that any suspected epidemic should be reported within 24 hours of discovery. On January 1 2020 the WHO asked China about the mystery illness in Wuhan. However, China confirmed the illness two days later and took a further 6 days to reveal it was dealing with a novel coronavirus.

The Chinese Communist Party Is an Environmental Catastrophe

China struggles to recover economically from the impact of the pandemic, it is set to deal a painful blow to global efforts to fight climate change. The party has often sacrificed environmental regulations as soon as GDP targets and economic growth have been threatened, thus industrial or trade decline paradoxically produces soaring pollution. But even in normal times, China’s soaring carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are a massive part of the dire threat to all life on earth posed by climate change.

China is rewriting the facts about coronavirus to suit its own narrative

A Panorama programme, airing tonight at 7:30pm on BBC One, shows how Xi Jinping’s government has tried to hide the truth about the spread of Covid-19. From 31 December to 20 January, China’s political leaders played down the risks of the virus, squandering the lead their doctors and scientists had given them. Beijing is naturally sensitive about its early handling of what has gone on to become a global catastrophe. At home its censorship is so overwhelming that it can control the timeline and edit the facts to suit its narrative. Since January, censors have assiduously deleted documentary evidence and added events and comments retrospectively to suggest leadership engagement. As a result, there is no meaningful challenge inside China to the official version of events.
